Demetris has very kindly given us a kml file for use with Google Earth which shows all launches in the republic of Cyprus.

It can be downloaded here, and Google Earth can be downloaded direct from the GE site here.

The most reliable and arguably easiest of the flying sites in Cyprus.

Avdellero
I can say that there are two or three areas to launch from, my favourite would be the UN post 111, because you can park there and the ground is sloping and glider friendly. If you walk maybe 100m east, there is another good take off and the bottom landing options are even better. Both are reasonably top-landable. Wind direction S-SW - more details to follow.
Wind Direction: SE - S
Type of flying: Ridge soaring
Altitude: 277m ASL
Vertical to LZ: 109m
Pilot level: Intermediate

Fassoula
A promising site that sadly could soon be over-run by a wind farm

Kalo Chorio
A site not yet flown by me, but the main site for getting decent cross country flights... mainly because of lack of major obstacles once a sensible height is achieved. (1st km or two is tricky for landings, then apparently it becomes easy).
Wind Direction: SW-W
Type of flying: Thermal soaring
Altitude: 950m ASL
Vertical to LZ: 350m
Pilot level: Experienced in thermals (good landing skills/small take off skills)

Lefkara
Newly discovered site near the historic village of Lefkara. It has a nice flat takeoff area and lots of large fields to the South for landing on. Found by way of a dirt track climbing up the hill, it is only really accessible by use of a 4x4. It is very early days for this site and a thorough review will be needed, but it is hoped that this could be a very good site to fly XC from.
Wind Direction: SSE-SSW (possibly SW)
Type of flying: Thermalling
Altitude: 643m ASL
Vertical to LZ: 400m
Pilot level: Intermediate

Petra Tou Romiou
A nice, but small site with stunning views of Aphrodite's Rock which is said to be the birthplace of Aphrodite. Landing options are plenty, but accuracy is required, as the beach is very narrow.
Wind Direction: S-SW
Type of flying: Ridge Soaring
Altitude: 54m ASL
Vertical to LZ: 48m
Pilot level: Intermediate

Pissouri
A site that would be wonderful if it weren't for the restricted wind direction. A huge take off area, with good opportunities for landing. Even the possibility of thermal flying on calm days. Restricted access for retrieval.
Wind Direction: NE-E
Type of flying: Dynamic Soaring
Altitude: 100m ASL
Vertical to LZ: 80m
Pilot level: All level

Stavrovouni
A large dome shaped hill with a monastery on the top and wonderful views across the island. I've finally managed to fly from this amazing hill and anyone who paraglides must try to fly it. GH has to be good at Stavrovouni as the take off areas are restricted.
Wind Direction: NE-E
Type of flying: Thermal and Ridge Soaring
rAltitude: 650m ASL
Vertical to LZ: 300m
Pilot level: Intermediate to Advanced

Other sites:

  • Panayia
  • Pipis
  • Vougies South
  • Vougies Northeast
  • Vougies Northwest
  • Moutti Tou Dia (Troodos Mountain Range)
  • Kyrenia (Occupied Northern Cyprus) - There is a north facing take off and a WNW take off. Both are quite large and open, the former very straight forward. The latter is fairly easy, but you have to hug the ridgeline on your right (north) until it is safe for you to hop over it (beware any strength in the wind, especially if it veers north slightly, in which case, make sure you have a good height above it)
